VEHICLE & EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS
Mandatory equipment items for all 4WD vehicles are roll bars or factory installed metal tops, first aid kits, seat belts for all passengers, fire extinguisher, a functioning emergency brake, spare tire, tow strap or chain, and a legal exhaust system.
Competition vehicles have additional requirements. Competition rules usually specify certain safety requirements, depending upon the type of competition event and the class of vehicles you are entered under. Trail rides, poker runs, club runs may also have special rules such as CB antennas not over four feet in length. These requirements are all designed to provide you and the spectators with maximum protection and safety in mind. In addition, 4WD trips into remote areas, especially extended trips, require numerous items that should be carried with you to insure a safe and speedy return.
VEHICLE INSPECTION
There are two basic types of inspections that must be performed on your 4WD vehicle in order to assure a trouble free and safe journey.
First, a last minute pre-trip inspection should always be made prior to leaving on a trip, or at least once every day when on an extended journey. Basically this is a last minute check to insure all systems and equipment are ready for service.
Secondly, a post trip inspection should be accomplished whenever your trip has ended. In the case of an extended or overnight trip, it should be performed right after a days travel, in order that you can accomplish any necessary repairs in advance of your next day's travel. The post-trip inspection is simply a more intensive and detailed inspection of your vehicle for structural integrity, security, wear and tear type items. It is not a bad idea to give your vehicle a quick checkover before hitting the highway after a rough and tough trip, especially the underside for fluid leaks and damage to the tires, undercarriage, tubing and wiring. This quick check could prevent either a serious or critical failure of brakes, cooling system, tires, engine or gear train components.
